Moat House going for gold in Twilight Games

As Team GB’s Olympic medal haul grows, residents at Moat House are also going for gold this week in the inaugural Twilight Games, organised by Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport (LRS).

As one of seven homes going head to head from across the county, the home in New Road will be competing in everything from sitting volleyball, bean bag throwing to petanque, mini boccia and audio basketball as part of the initiative to celebrate the 2016 Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games and encourage care home residents to stay fit and active.

Home manager Nicky Hall said the residents had completely embraced the idea and were excited about the home – which has been given Team GB as its participating country – competing this week. “Everyone’s been practising hard and feeling confident,” she said. “We are now just hoping we can follow in Andy Murray and Max Whitlock’s footsteps!”

As a pilot initiative, Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport (LRS) have developed a programme of activity which enables older generations in care settings to participate in the games, whatever their level of ability and mobility.

The specially adapted games, funded by Sport England, are aimed at assisting people with their co-ordination, concentration and mobility, but above all to have fun and enjoy the social and wellbeing benefits of being active with others.

Each care setting will undertake the games in a competitive and spirited manner throughout the week of 15th-19th August. After all the Twilight Games have taken place, the results will be announced on Monday 22nd August, with a presentation arranged at the winning care home at a later date, when the team will be presented with the inaugural Twilight Games Shield.
