Moat House Care Home Towers Above the Rest in Regional Sunflower Competition

Residents at the Moat House Care Home, in Burbage, are celebrating, having won Adept Care Homes annual sunflower growing competition.

Residents joined Richard Mee, Grounds Keeper in the garden to record the final measurements. “It’s one of the residents favourite annual competitions, there is always so much excitement leading up to the finale and it brings purpose and joy throughout the warm summer months.

All 7 of the Adept midlands-based care homes took part in the challenge which saw Marjory, who has always been a keen gardener, and her fellow residents in the Moat House Resident Gardening Club, grow the tallest sunflower of 290cm (9ft 6”) in height!

‘Wow! We won; this is wonderful news. We just fed and watered our sunflowers all summer long, whatever the weather. I think the secret to our success is talking to them!’ explained Marjory from the Resident Gardening Club.

Hayley, Home Manager added: “I am very proud of our residents for this achievement as well as team members who have helped residents to get involved. Getting out in the gardens has given residents so much pleasure and it has its health benefits too by increasing levels of physical activity, mobility and flexibility which helps to keep the brain and body in sync. We will enjoy this victory, but we’ve really just enjoyed being part of the competition which has given residents plenty to talk and think about,’
