Kiwi House Care Home Creating a ‘Buzz’ with New Barber Shop

A Local Care Home is proving to be ‘a cut above the rest’ as they recreate the traditional barber shop experience for the male residents at Kiwi House Care Home in Derby.

On Tuesday 7th March 23 the home launched its new monthly club. The home’s salon is transformed into a traditional makeshift barber shop. A waiting area is established in the lobby, with an abundance of social activities, ranging from footy highlights, horse-racing, musicals to episodes of ‘Only Fools and Horses!’

The men are served a choice of beverages with a selection of cakes, biscuits and baked goods, whilst waiting for their turn in the chair.

Once in the chair, they enjoy a good old-fashioned shave, followed by an aromatherapy hot towel and finished off with a relaxing facial massage – just like in the olden days. Many of the Kiwi House men use this time to chat about their families, have a sing along with the barber or just to talk about memories of visiting the barber in the younger days.

“Look at me, I feel like a new man. My wife would have fallen in love all over again,” said Tony (94).

“The men leave feeling confident, looking good, their mood lifted and more memories are made in the ‘old barbershop’. This home is one of a kind, residents seem so happy,” said the Barber.

“It’s just like going to my old barber, he’s done a good job hasn’t he? I have had a lovely afternoon,” said Ron (88).
