Oh What Joy! Resident Takes the Reins in Carriage-Driving Adventure at Kiwi House

Residents and team at Kiwi House Care Home in Alvaston, Derby were all smiles as one very special wish came true for much-loved resident Joy, thanks to the home’s Make a Wish programme.

Joy Plumb (90), who has always had a passion for horses, wished for the chance to go carriage driving – and her dream became reality with a magical trip to Wenlo Riding for the Disabled.

The day was made even more special by the warm welcome from Dawn and her wonderful team of volunteers, who greeted Joy and her companions with tea and delicious cakes before the adventure began. Joy was joined by her son Kevin and five close friends from Kiwi House, making it a true community celebration.

Fitted with a smart riding hat, Joy climbed aboard the carriage with Dawn, instructing. After a practice around the arena, she and Kevin took to the scenic tracks. As the carriage returned, Joy waved excitedly to her friends, her smile saying it all.

“I was so excited,” said Joy. “It was wonderful – I’d love to do it all again another day!”

The group also had the chance to meet and fuss the ponies, creating yet more treasured memories. Back at Kiwi House, Joy proudly wore her ‘Day to Remember’ rosette, a joyful reminder of her adventure.

Home Manager, Jeanette Heath said:

“It was such a fantastic day, and seeing Joy’s happiness was incredible. Activities like this make such a difference – they give our residents moments to treasure, a sense of purpose, and unforgettable memories to share with family and friends.”
