Former Sainsbury’s Employee Finds New Purpose as Shopkeeper at Kiwi House Care Home

After over 25 years of dedicated service at Sainsbury’s in Derby, Brenda Wilkins (90), now a cherished resident at Kiwi House Care Home, is once again doing what she loves – helping people shop.

Brenda, who spent decades building her reputation for friendliness, hard work, and customer service at Sainsbury’s, has found new purpose in her role as the in-house shopkeeper at Kiwi House’s popular onsite corner shop.

Now in her 90s, Brenda has fully embraced her new role – restocking shelves, tidying the shop, offering helpful advice, and greeting fellow residents with a warm smile and tailored product recommendations. She even keeps a mental list of who likes which biscuits!

“It gives me something to look forward to,” Brenda says. “It’s lovely helping others again – it feels like I’ve got my old job back, but with more tea breaks!”

The corner shop, part of Kiwi House’s focus on independence and community, offers residents a familiar, comforting experience – and thanks to Brenda’s involvement, it’s become a vibrant social hub.

Home Manager, Jeanette Heath shared:

“Brenda has brought such energy and warmth to the shop. She’s always the first to lend a hand and her passion for helping others is infectious. She’s not just running the shop – she’s building a community.”

Adept Care Homes is proud to support meaningful activities that enrich lives, and Brenda’s story is a shining example of how purpose and joy can thrive at any stage of life.
