National Care Home Open Day event to ‘spur’ on community

FROM tin-can throwing to a yee-haw hoedown, there’s plenty to ‘spur’ on the local community at this year’s National Care Home Open Day event at Douglas Court care home in Derby.

Everyone is invited to pop in and enjoy the country and western-themed celebration at the home in Ivy Square, Normanton, on Friday, June 17th, starting at 2pm.

Entertainment will be provided by popular performers Kevin and Marie, whilst visitors are also welcome to tuck into a country and western buffet, with everything from scrumptious hot dogs to corn on the cobs and refreshments available throughout the day.

Home manager Anne-Marie Robinson said: “Our cowboy hats and check shirts are at the ready and, as well as tin-can throwing contests and a performance by Kevin and Marie in the lounge, we’re hoping the weather is nice so we can put out some hay bales and the gazebo and have a garden party. This is a great opportunity for visitors to meet the fabulous birds in our aviary.”

She added that people didn’t always realise what inspiring places care homes could be.

“National Care Home Open Day is a fantastic chance for the local community to meet some really unique, intelligent and charming characters and Douglas Court has no shortage of these.

“We are looking forward to a fun, entertaining day with the local community, whilst our care team and staff members will be on hand to provide an insight into what it’s like to live and work at Douglas Court. We will also be giving advice to those who are helping a loved one make the transition and talking through our pioneering dementia practices.”
