Residents at Burbage-based Moat House Care Home proudly presented a cheque on behalf of the home to remember former Moat House resident and former President of The Royal British Legion’s Hinckley Branch, Ronald (Ron) Collyer.

The cheque was presented to Branch Chairman, Lloyd Bagshaw who was joined by other members of the RBL and Ron’s children, Ian and Barbara, as part of the VE Day celebrations held in the gardens at Moat House Care Home. The donation from the residents who’s fundraising efforts will help place a commemorative bench, ‘pride of place’ in front of the war memorial in Argents Mead to honour of Ron.
“We would like to thank residents for this donation to help honour and thank Ron for his service, both to the branch and for his commitment and sacrifices during the war” said Lloyd, Chairman at RBL Hinckley Branch.
“Ron was a well-loved and esteemed resident at Moat House which he called home for nearly 5 years. He was well known local newsagent, as well as a very talented musician, performing alongside big names such as Larry Grayson. He would play the piano for our special events, resident sing-alongs and as a long-standing member of the Moat House Choir Club, or even just to sing happy birthday to one of his fellow residents. Music was a big part of his life and he was a big part of life at Moat House” – said Care Manager Collee McKay.
“Dad would have loved today, The Royal British Legion and Moat House were very important to him, I am sure he would have been proud” said Barbara, Ron’s daughter.
“Ron could always be found at the organ at any event, Our VE Day garden ‘street’ party was the perfect setting, it is nice that we can remember him and the joy he brought to our home in this lasting way” said Brenda, a resident at Moat House
