Douglas Court Care Home Reach New Heights in Sunflower Showdown

This summer, residents at Adept Care Homes across the Midlands took part in a friendly battle of the blooms—our annual sunflower growing competition. After months of nurturing, chatting, and perhaps a little coaxing, we’re delighted to announce a tie for the top spot, with two homes achieving a jaw-dropping height of 10 feet 1 inch!

The 2024 sunflower crown is shared between Moat House Care Home in Burbage and Douglas Court Care Home in Derby, where the residents are basking in their well-earned victory.

The competition was as competitive as it was enjoyable, with all seven Adept Care Homes growing their sunflowers through sun, rain, and everything in between. Richard Mee, our ever-dedicated Grounds Keeper, was on hand to measure the final results, though the towering sunflowers probably didn’t need a referee to confirm their champion status.

“It’s always a delight to see our residents so involved,” said Paul Bundyford, Home Manager at Moat House. “They’ve been out there every day, come rain or shine, making sure these sunflowers were thriving. I’m not sure if it was the watering or the friendly chats that did the trick, but whatever it was, it worked!”

Over at Douglas Court, the excitement was just as high—quite literally. “Our residents and team have been on sunflower watch all summer,” said their Home Manager with a grin. “At this rate, we might have to start tending to them from the upstairs windows!”

This beloved annual competition has once again proven to be much more than just a gardening challenge. It’s brought joy, purpose, and a touch of healthy rivalry into our homes. Alongside the pride of growing these impressive sunflowers, our residents have enjoyed the benefits of fresh air, sunshine, and the thrill of the contest. Their sunflowers are now the talk of the town—and likely the envy of local gardeners.

As we celebrate this year’s joint victory, we’re already looking forward to next year’s contest. Who knows what heights we’ll reach next? Only time, a bit of sunshine, and a sprinkle of magic will tell.
