Douglas Court Care Home Unveils New Sensory Garden to Enhance Wellbeing for Residents

Douglas Court Care Home in Derby has launched a new sensory garden, an innovative space designed to enrich the lives of residents. The garden, built from scratch and designed with input from the residents themselves, is a testament to the creativity, collaboration, and community spirit of Douglas Court.

The sensory garden features a variety of elements aimed at stimulating the senses and providing a therapeutic environment:

The garden features newly raised community planters, allowing all residents, including those in wheelchairs, to comfortably engage in gardening activities. Other highlights include musical toadstools that produce soothing sounds when tapped or when it rains, offering both auditory stimulation and a playful experience. The luxurious Bug Hotel encourages biodiversity by inviting beneficial insects, contributing to a vibrant and dynamic ecosystem. Sustainability Flower Pots and Hanging Baskets, which beautify the garden while promoting eco-friendly gardening practices, adorn the area. Additionally, the colourful Xylophone Windchime adds an element of surprise and delight, producing melodious sounds with the wind.

The creation of the sensory garden has been a collaborative effort. Residents, supported by the dedicated team at Douglas Court, played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life. From designing the layout to planting flowers, their involvement has fostered a sense of ownership and pride in the project.

Kenny Nelson, Managing Director of Adept Care Homes, expressed his excitement about the garden, saying, “This sensory garden is a wonderful addition to Douglas Court. It not only provides a stimulating and therapeutic environment for our residents, especially those living with dementia but also reflects the strong sense of community and engagement within our home. We are incredibly proud of the hard work and creativity that our residents and team have invested in this project.”

Sensory gardens offer numerous benefits for all the residents living with dementia. They provide a safe space for exploration and interaction, which can help reduce anxiety and agitation. The variety of sensory experiences – from the colours and textures of plants to the sounds of water and windchimes – can evoke positive memories and enhance overall wellbeing.

One resident shared their thoughts on the new garden, saying, “Being part of building this garden has been a joyful experience. I love spending time here; it brings back wonderful memories and makes me feel at peace.”

The unveiling of the sensory garden marks a significant milestone for Douglas Court Care Home, showcasing its commitment to providing an enriching and supportive environment for all residents.
