RESIDENTS at The Willows in Coventry are hoping their creations for the care home’s summer fayre ‘bake off’ go down in a blaze of glory – especially with local firemen judging the contest.
Coventry Fire Service are hoping to taste some sizzling sensations before crowning the winner of the garden-themed challenge at the Earlsdon home event from 2pm on Saturday, August 6.
Manager Bev Jones said: “Our residents do a lot of baking and what better as a bit of competitive fun than a bake-off. Residents are dusting off their aprons, getting their spatulas ready and, with firemen coming along to judge the challenge, are hoping their creations don’t crash and burn!
“Judging will be done at 3pm and there will be plenty of cakes for everyone to tuck into.”
The Coventry Blaze ice hockey team’s mascot and the Lord Mayor of Coventry, Councillor Lindsley Harvard, are also set to be special guests at the Westminster Road home’s fayre, which will have a host of entertainment for the local community to enjoy and is free entry.
As well as a theatrical performance and stalls selling everything from bric-a-brac to homemade fudge, cakes and quiches, there will be the usual children’s corner, with a bouncy castle, candyfloss machine, face painting and hook-a- duck, and a tombola and raffle raising money for the residents’ social fund, which boosts the home’s lively social programme.
There will be free parking at Grosvenor Road car park, but you will need a pass to display on your windscreen, which are available from the home in Westminster Road on the day.
