Resident, Dorothy’s, dream comes true with a breathtaking helicopter ride over Derbyshire skies
There were cheers, smiles, and even a few happy tears at The Old Vicarage Care Home as Dot (Dorothy Brewer) (age 90), one of the home’s much-loved residents, saw her lifelong dream take flight — quite literally!

Thanks to the care home’s Make A Wish program, Dot enjoyed an unforgettable helicopter adventure that whisked her high above the stunning Derbyshire countryside. Beaming with excitement, Dot waved from the skies as her proud daughters watched and cheered her on from below — a truly magical moment for the whole family.
“It was absolutely wonderful!” Dot shared afterwards, her smile lighting up the room. “I felt free as a bird up there! I can’t wait to show all my friends the photos and tell them every detail.”
The Make A Wish program at The Old Vicarage was created to celebrate residents’ dreams — big or small — and make them come true. From afternoon teas to dream adventures like Dot’s, the initiative reminds everyone that joy and adventure have no age limit.
“We’re over the moon that we could make this wish a reality for Dot,” said Jordele Folkes, Home Manager at The Old Vicarage Care Home. “Seeing her excitement and hearing her laughter was such a special moment for our whole team. This is what our Make A Wish program is all about — creating magical memories that last a lifetime.”
As Dot’s helicopter soared above Clay Cross, it wasn’t just a flight — it was a celebration of joy, courage, and the power of dreams at any age.
