Harriet Sings to Win Sunflower Competition

99 year old Harriet wins Adept’s first tallest sunflower competition.

Harriet Squires, 99, has reaped the reward of her years of gardening know-how by winning a group wide sunflower growing competition.

“I’ve been singing to it,” reveals Harriet when asked if she had any secret growing tips. “Come on darling, keep growing,’ sang Harriet each day of the competition which started at the beginning of summer.
It turns out Harriet is no stranger to gardening success, she won a Derby City Council award in 2000 for the Best Hanging Baskets which saw her receive a £10.00 plant voucher from the Mayor.

Measuring an impressive 303cm, Harriet’s sunflower wins a competition which saw residents at all 7 midlands-based care homes took part in the competition and Harriet, also known as Peggy, was overwhelmed to be crowned winner. “I can’t believe it, I’m so proud. This has made my day’” she said.

“It’s great to see Peggy win the competition especially with such a magnificent entry! We purposefully vary our activities programme so that there’s something to appeal to the majority of our residents. It’s been wonderful to see our residents tending to and nurturing their sunflowers each day. I’m very proud of everyone!” added Lee Daly, Douglas Court Manager.
