Residents at Chetwynd House Care Home in Chilwell recently came together to celebrate a truly remarkable milestone — the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough, while also reflecting on his deep historic ties to Nottinghamshire.

The special celebration sparked conversations, reminiscence and appreciation throughout the home, as residents shared memories of watching Sir David’s iconic wildlife documentaries over the decades and discussed the incredible impact his work has had across the world.
For many residents, the occasion felt particularly meaningful due to Sir David Attenborough’s strong connection to the local area. The internationally renowned Attenborough Nature Reserve, situated just outside Nottingham, carries the family name and reflects the Attenborough family’s historic roots in the nearby village where both his father and grandfather were born.
Residents spent time discussing the famous reserve, local wildlife and Sir David’s lifelong passion for conservation and education, making the day both nostalgic and inspiring.
Jordele Folkes, Home Manager for Chetwynd House Care Home said:
“Celebrating Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday felt especially important here in Nottinghamshire because of his local connections and the pride people feel towards him. His work has inspired generations and continues to bring people together through a shared appreciation of nature and the world around us.”
The celebration created a warm and reflective atmosphere within the home, with residents enjoying documentaries, conversations and memories centred around one of Britain’s most admired national treasures.
The event was a wonderful opportunity to honour not only Sir David’s extraordinary career, but also the lasting connection between his family legacy and the Nottinghamshire community.
