It was a trip down memory lane for Joseph “Joe” Ginger, a resident at Harrier House Care Home in Hucknall, who recently fulfilled a lifelong wish to revisit Wollaton Hall – a place that holds a special place in his heart.
For Joe, the visit was far more than a simple outing; it was a return to a beloved part of his youth. At just 13 years old, Joe received his first bicycle from his uncle – a gift that opened the door to countless adventures with friends exploring the scenic grounds of Wollaton Hall and watching the graceful deer that roam the park.

The victory is a testament to the passion, care, and teamwork that goes into Moat House’s mature and luscious gardens, which are already admired for their vibrant flowers, tranquil seating areas, and vegetable patches lovingly maintained by residents alongside Grounds Manager Richard Mee.

Joyce Pearson (92), Margaret Barlow (96), and their good friend Ivan “Dick” King (94) spent a joyous afternoon watching the beloved musical Fiddler on the Roof, as part of Harrier House’s Make a Wish programme.
The trio, all passionate about theatre and live performance, were thrilled from the moment the curtain rose. They laughed, sang along to familiar songs, and soaked up every moment of the colourful show.

The competition is a highlight of the year for residents and teams alike. It all begins with a celebratory planting session in spring, when residents plant not only sunflowers but also vegetables and other flowers as part of a wider gardening tradition. Exactly 100 days later, Grounds Manager Richard Mee makes his rounds with the measuring stick to determine which home’s sunflower stands the tallest.
