A lifelong passion for Afghan Hounds led to a truly unforgettable day for Bowood Court Care Home resident Irene Smith, whose wish to return to Crufts resulted in a heartwarming and emotional reunion with a cherished friend from her dog showing days.

Residents at Douglas Court Care Home in Derby made waves recently as three ladies enjoyed a memorable Make A Wish experience with a special trip to the swimming pool.

The enthusiastic residents joined the community event on Saturday 21st March 2026, at Clay Cross Social Centre before heading out to help tidy up the local area.

Residents were joined by their partners, families, and friends for a romance-themed lunch, thoughtfully designed to celebrate love in all its forms. The dining room was filled with smiles and conversation as couples enjoyed the opportunity to share a meaningful meal together.

The light-hearted morning gave residents the chance to chat with the teams, learn more about their important roles, and even take a closer look inside the emergency vehicles — an experience that sparked plenty of excitement and conversation.

The special afternoon opened with a beautiful performance from the home’s very own choir, the Kiwi Chorus, accompanied by a touching slideshow of treasured moments from the past year. The moving tribute celebrated the friendships, laughter, and meaningful connections shared between residents, families, and staff.

Devoted couples were at the centre of the celebration, each sharing their special day together. The morning began with live entertainment from singer Sarah Bright, as excitement built ahead of a beautifully prepared couples’ lunch.

Guests were treated to a delicious selection of freshly prepared pancakes, served with a variety of traditional toppings, and perfectly paired with a complimentary glass of prosecco. The event created a warm and welcoming atmosphere, giving residents the opportunity to celebrate alongside their families and enjoy quality time together.
